SUMMARY:Alzheimer\'s forum for the Latino community
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to know more about the risk factors for Alzheimer\'s disease and dementia in Latinos? Join the Latino Golden Age Committee, the Alzheimer\'s Association, and the Penn Memory Center for an Alzheimer\'s forum in the Latino community \"Special Risk Factors for Alzhimer\'s Disease and Dementia in Latinos Presenilin Gene Mutation Diabetes Metabolic Syndrome Presented by Steven E. Arnold, MD Director, Penn Memory Center Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology Director, Clinical Core of the University of Pennsylvania Alzheimer\'s Disease Core Center Director, Geriatric Psychiatry Section Director, Cellular and Molecular Neuropathology Program Associate Director, Institute on Aging University of Pennsylvania Research is beginning to uncover the impact of Alzheimer\'s disease among Hispanics. Scientists have identified certain risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing Alzheimer\'s: Hispanics/Latinos face a higher risk of Alzheimer\'s disease and other dementias because they are living longer but have higher rates of cardiovascular risk factors. Risk factors for vascular disease - mainly diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol - may also be risk factors for Alzheimer\'s and stroke-related dementia. Latinos in the United States have higher rates of diabetes, putting them at greater risk for developing Alzheimer\'s. Hispanics are the fastest-growing population in the United States, and Latino life expectancy will increase by age 87 by 2050, surpassing all other ethnic groups in the United States. Those who have a parent, brother, or sister with Alzheimer\'s are two to three times more likely to develop the disease. The risk increases if more than one family member has the illness.
